Ogier wins Rally Chile

Sebastian Ogier has beat Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans to an impressive win at Rally Chile. At the start of the day the french veteran had a 6.3s lead at the start of the day. This gap was compromised slightly after Evans clawed back 4 tenths of a second on stage 14 only for Ogier to immediately take 4.4s back from Evans on Stage 15. Super Sunday standings were tight going into the final stage but Ogier set another blisteringly fast time to claim a clean sweep and maximum possible points from the Rally Chile stages. Ogier now leads the world championship by 2 points over Elfyn Evans. The Wrc circus now heads to the Central European Round to continue this emphatic World Championship battle, the closest title challenge within the last 22 years. It was a bad weekend for some of the outsiders in the championship battle with Ott Tanäk having engine trouble on Friday evening, retiring from the lead. Tanäk did 2 stages on Saturday before Hyundai decided to retire his car again to preserve the engine for super Sunday points. This plan fell apart sooner rather than later with Tanäk comparing his Hyundai I20 Rally1 car to “Rally2 pace” after a poor stage 14. Teammate Thierry Neuville had a better weekend finishing 4th and a final push in the Power stage saw him take 4 extra points for his troubles. And finally, a disappointing rally for the flying Finn Kalle Rövanpera. It was a good start from the 2-time champ however a puncture on Friday hampered his progress. From there, the Finn was close to a top 5 finish but Sami Pajari’s pace was too good for Rövanpera to match. As it stands in the championship:                               1 S OGIER -224 Points
